Some, like Son Volt, released new music during the pandemic. Others, like Lucy Kaplansky, Shovels & Rope and Joan Osborne have new albums coming out soon.

Lucy Kaplansky has been dubbed “the award-winning minstrel of modern folk” by the Boston Globe. larry campbell and Teresa Williams are American royalty. He is known as a passionate songwriter and multi-instrumentalist while she has a gift for clear harmonies. In March, Kaplansky plans to release his new album, Last days of summerwhich includes songs referencing the pandemic.

After winning a Grammy for his moving ballad “Walking in Memphis”, Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of the most compelling singer-songwriters of this generation, combining the precision of a brilliant composer with the passion of a great Soul man. Last fall, Saturday Night Live did a hilarious parody from Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”.

Founded by songwriter and singer Jay Farrar, Son Volt is an American rock band that also infuses folk, country, blues and soul into its sound. Their songs often seek out the ghosts of America’s discordant or forgotten past. The group celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2020, while in lockdown due to the pandemic. They released their 10th studio album, Electro Melodier in July 2021.

A longtime friend of Hootie and the Blowfish, the guitarist has been dubbed the “great American romantic” (The New York Times). Edwin McCain’s tender and instantly recognizable ballads “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask for More” are immortalized in several movie and TV soundtracks of the 2000s.

The “Bayou Soul” style and rich voice of Marc Broussard are influenced by his Louisiana roots and his musical father, guitarist of Soul band The Boogie Kings.

Shovels & Rope channels country, folk, bluegrass, Americana and blues through an edgy indie rock prism. Partners musically and in life, this duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst blends the threads of their solo careers into the harmonious music they blend. Their new album Manticore due out February 18.

APRIL 9

With pure sounds, interwoven acoustic guitars and rootsy songwriting, The Milk Carton Kids weave a captivating spell. The two-time Grammy-nominated Indie-Folk duo’s harmonious sound has earned them comparisons to Simon & Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers. Their captivating shows have a touch of comedy with Smothers Brothers-esque banter.
